Many of my sixth graders are reading at third and fourth grade levels. In surveying them to discover their strongest pathway to learning, I discovered they are highly visual, hands-on learners. They need to manipulate and annotate passages and have an example to follow. A low copy budget and a lack of consumable materials keep me from having passages available in timely manner. The laser printer will provide a means for putting texts IN THEIR HANDS for practice of the active reading strategies, rather than just in a book. In addition, the document camera will allow me to be in front of the class demonstrating to my students how to put what they are learning in action. Students in the 21st century are engaged by the use of what technology in the classroom can offer. My kids need to improve their reading comprehension, they need to close the gap between their reading skills and those of their peers, they need to be on track for college and career readiness. I believe the tools open up the avenue to get them there.
