When teaching at a K-5 elementary school packed to the gills with nearly 800 students, it is hard to make sure that each student is able to access the materials they need to reach their goals. At our high-poverty school, with nearly 50% of our students qualifying for ELL services and over 83% of our students on free and reduced price lunch, it is hard to individualize instruction. My students come to my 4th grade classroom reading anywhere from pre-K to the fifth grade level. Those that are 1-2 grade levels behind are the majority.
Many of my students are unaware of the world outside of their apartment complexes and the 5 block radius around our school. When talking about their city, their state, and their country, they have very little background knowledge to build on, besides the crime they see daily. Making connections in our classroom, helping them believe in themselves and their success, and building their knowledge of the world are my biggest priorities.
