My school is located in the Wenatchee Valley of Washington state. Agriculture is the primary economic driver for the area and the majority of the student population I work with come from families who labor in the area's orchards and packing sheds. More than half of the student population qualifies for the free and reduced lunch program, and many of my students could be the first in their family to attend college.
The majority of the students in the Coffee Roasting Club are there because they don't feel engaged by many of the other programs at our school.
They are seeking a place to belong and a consistent adult presence in their life that is positive and respectful. They also have a genuine interest in coffee.
