You can help children grow dreams larger than life and nurture a love of books by giving them a simple gift - a cozy place to hear a story. Each day I teach 30 first grade students. More than 85% of them live in poverty, and most of them do not have books at home. But each day at story time, a new world opens up to kids - a world of possibilities and promise. In the words and illustrations of books, children see places, people, and things they might not experience personally for years. They learn life lessons, build character skills, and laugh at silly jokes. Sitting together gives students a rare opportunity in a packed curriculum to bond socially with one another. The story experience - laughing, empathizing, questioning - is shared together.
