Many of my students are new to the country and to the language of instruction, and come from traumatic circumstances. They are reluctant to share, trust and engage with others, yet they need to learn how to interact with others to become productive contributing members of our global society. My students need a classroom environment that is more engaging. By reinventing my classroom, I hope to build a more inclusive and safe environment which will increase student engagement and attendance.
The students I work with have numerous stressors that often add to their lack of attendance and motivation. My desire is to create centers within the room where students can collaborate and interact with others while they participate in classroom activities. The centers will provide a safe space where students can independently engage in the curriculum while they work on completing tasks with others. Sitting along peers and partners will help students feel more comfortable engaging in classroom discussions. Sitting students together will also increase the conversational opportunities in the target language of English among the students.
The tables and chairs will create a space that fosters collaboration, risk-taking, and discussions in English. Students who are currently attending 85% of school days or less will be more motivated to attend class where they will be learning in an environment that naturally lends itself to increased collaboration and engagement. Students who are more motivated to come to class and actively participate will be less likely to fail more than one class. Your contribution will directly help my students engage in their learning because it will help me create a comfortable classroom that promotes collaboration and learning. Flexible seating is inviting, and will give my students to the ability increase opportunities to interact with others or find a safe space to complete
