I teach in a small, tight-knit rural community made up largely of long-established families in the farming and agriculture businesses. Several generations have passed through the walls of our school. Nearly everyone here is related to someone else in the community or someone working at the school. Sports is one of the unifying elements of the community's identity. Most of our students participate in several sports. Many of my students don't have exposure to much diversity: in places, people, or ideas. They are hard working and value getting good grades. What I would like for them is to move away from thinking about grades and focus more on the value of learning, and the role that reading and literature play in education and in life. I want to provide them with a variety of perspectives and ideas, to have them weigh and consider in order to develop critical thinking skills.
