Middle school scholars are hesitant to share their mathematical thinking out loud or even commit it to paper. The risk of being wrong freezes them in their tracks. Yet study after study had demonstrated that willingness to make mistakes improves learning. Whiteboards are a powerful tool to reduce anxiety and help kids take risks.
Scholars can use whiteboards:
*as 'scratch paper' when troubleshooting a complex problem.
*raise the whiteboard activities where every student shares their answer.
*modeling problems/explanations for peers.
*response to review games (e.g. math jeopardy, math rally)
*explore relationships between numbers on number lines/coordinate plane
*organize place value (decimals-adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing) using grids
