While our alternative curriculum provides several different levels of learning for each subject area, there are some things that it does not address.
Being knowledgeable about current events not only helps us understand our community, our country, and our world better, it gives us common topics to engage in communication with others. These topics are often difficult to make accessible to my students at a level they can understand. This is EXACTLY what News 2 You does for them! It breaks down the pertinent information regarding current events and presents it in several different ways so that EACH child is able to comprehend it and meaningfully communicate and interact with others. Topics range from state and national news stories, to sports teams/games coverage, and holiday celebrations, just to name a few!
It is amazing to see the moment when one of my students recognizes a topic someone else is discussing. They are so eager and excited to participate meaningfully in conversations with others, and to show that they have something to contribute! Being able to give them that opportunity is so very rewarding!
