This project will keep book clubs going in our 8th grade classrooms. Our diverse students cherish books that they see themselves in. Books that are windows and mirrors into their lives will help keep the conversations deep and rich. It's important to give students access to books that are written by and about people from traditionally marginalized groups to foster empathy and strengthen the feeling of community around literature.
When students read about characters that showcase our diverse world, they are broadening their perspective. These multiple-copy sets will allow students to read a book of their choosing with their peers and have discussions around plot of the book as well as the social issues from the world are represented in the texts.
