If my project is fully funded, I will use these micro:bits to enhance students' understanding of and interest in computer science through physical computing. In order to prepare students for the future, I believe it is critical that they develop the habits of mind of scientists and engineers, such as creativity, perseverance, collaboration, and critical thinking. Whether or not these learners pursue STEM careers, these skills will enable them to be effective decision-makers and innovators throughout their lifetimes.
Using the micro: bits, I will engage my students in engineering design challenges that will task them with creating new technologies to solve real-world problems. For example, students may write programs that allow the micro: bits to serve as a safety device for wheelchair users after dark, step counters to enhance physical fitness or remotes that allow them to take photographs or open automatic doors from a distance. Due to the multi-functionality of micro: bits, they will provide my students with nearly endless opportunities for creative problem-solving. We will be able to use these devices, again and again, year after year to really make computer science come alive for young learners!
