I strongly believe that before a student can learn, they need to feel safe and respected. For this reason, we start each day in our community circle where I read a social emotional book, then we have quality discussions based off that book. These are powerful conversations where students feel free to not only discuss the social-emotional issues from the book, but also share about their personal experiences from their own precious, little lives. We close our circle time by allowing each student the opportunity to praise another student for something positive they have seen or heard. This is a powerful way to start each school day on a positive word.
