Cuba. Honduras. Puerto Rico. Dominican Republic. Albania. Vietnam. My students come from all over the world. And while most of them do speak some English, for many it is limited "In Spanish." or "I don't understand." The challenges of teaching in an urban school are compounded by teaching students for whom English is a second, or third or fourth, language.
I see in my students a desire to learn, but often that desire is obscured by the obstacles that they have to overcome every day. Obstacles including, but not limited to, a lack of comprehension of the English language. The English language learners in my classes are intelligent, vibrant young men and women who only need to be given the tools to succeed. Every day I strive to give them those tools. Every day they choose whether or not to take them. And when they accept my help, we work together to build the foundation for a better future.
