My students are a rather impoverished group of public school kids in SW Washington. Approximately 100 kids are on the playground during each 30 minute recess. There are three recesses each day on this particular playground, so the equipment and toys see a lot of use and wear and tear. It is the only recess students have during a 7 hour school day, so providing a variety of movement and play choices has been important to our staff. And because our school has a 50% poverty rate and 30% Hispanic population, I would imagine that this is the only sand many of these kids will experience.
