My students have a hard time entering the classroom ready to learn. My school has Morning Mindfulness as a required session at the beginning of their day. My students use the rocking chair, weighted blanket, a weighted friend and calming music to rock themselves into a calmer physical and mental space. My students use this space and then find themselves ready to learn. The rocking motion simulates the motion of a loved one soothing them to sleep. The soothing station is available all day and they can use it at any time. Sometimes, they like to take the weighted friends to their tables while they work. Other times, they like to take the weighted blanket to the giant pillows across the room and lay down during their free time or when they are overwhelmed and realize they need a break. Often times we have more than one friend that needs to soothe themselves. The use of multiple weighted friends and headphones allows for this to happen. Allowing them to prepare their minds, bodies, and hearts at the beginning of the day and throughout the day means they are able to more thoroughly engage in any academic activity. Creating a space where they feel safe and can lower the high cortisol levels in their body allows for great learning to happen!
