I have two enthusiastic sets of kids, who are eager to learn and participate. Their abilities range from learners who need extra time and support in order to grasp new concepts through those who learn quickly and need to be extended. We also have a wide mixture of demographics, with many student on reduced or free lunch; and family structure could be any combination you can imagine. School is not always the number one priority in the student's household, and not all families promote education beyond high school. Regardless of ability or background, though, I want them all to be successful students.
The kids sit in desk clusters in Hogwarts' houses after being sorted the first day of school. The kids earn house points for great behavior, test scores, teamwork, etc..., and I award a House cup prize at the end of each year to the house with the most points. It works well as a motivator, but they are still fighting against their pent-up energy.
