My students are primarily English language learners who live in poverty and have very little access to books at home. Most have family members with limited education and minimal if any English language skills. Having books at home that these families can read to their children in their primary language (Spanish in this case) would enable them to share the joys of reading and learning with their children, thus encouraging literacy development.
As our literacy program is based on the Magic Treehouse books, our students want to be able to borrow these books from us, but we have few Spanish readers, rather many English readers that they cannot share with their families. Our students are very engaged learners with these books that we plan not only literacy, but science and social studies activities around. It would be wonderful for our students to be able to share these books with their families.
