In a program called, 鈥淥n Track,鈥 which assists students who are most at risk of dropping out of school, are in maternity release, or have come to the school in between quarters to stay enrolled and continue in their progress toward graduation, students work towards high school credits online through a learning management system with in-person assistance as needed from myself and an assistant. The courses they take are designed to be self-taught mostly, with video instruction. While we have an adequate number of Chromebooks for each student in the program, we do not have HEADSETS so that they can hear the video instruction. As a result, students are trying to read the closed-captions or simply ignoring the videos and waiting for them to play out. We were able to find disposable earbuds for about $2 each and purchased several pairs with personal funds, but found that students took them home or threw them away, or they didn't work, and of course they were not practical for sharing or cleaning.
This proposal is for a grant to provide 30 headsets and a storage solution for the students. It is important the headsets be sturdy for long-term use and easy to disinfect. We typically have 10-30 students at any given time, so 30 is the maximum number of headsets we would need.
