The challenge that I am facing is to get my first graders listening to stories several times throughout the week. Listening to someone read accurately and fluently increases reading comprehension, accuracy, fluency and vocabulary, starting at a very early age. For my first graders to become better readers, they need to listen to stories often. We are looking for a new listening center to help support our goal of all students reading at grade level by the end of the year. Our current tape recorder in the listening center is very old and often does not work. Many of the stories sold in stores now are on CD, not tape, reducing the number of quality books available.
