I teach at a public high school in a rural blue-collar Alaskan town. We have many students whose families struggle financially, our community struggles with alcoholism, meth addictions, casual racism, and violence. Still, our students are awesome: they work hard; they play hard; they are passionate about their hobbies, and their sports, and their music, and their friends; they are fiercely loyal to their families; and they try hard to be good people. They are not always connected to school, but that's on us. We need to improve what we offer, and make the connections to their lives more apparent. Despite budget cuts giving us larger classes, fewer offerings, fewer supplies, and fewer choices, we have to find ways to make school more intriguing, more relevant, and just more fun. Ðǿմ«Ã½ helps a great deal.
