Flexible and active seating allows students to quietly move while remaining focused on the task at hand. When students first enter the classroom, they choose a location based on their individual need. Some of my students utilize the steppers and ellipticals we currently have while other students need less movement. Making sure students are comfortable and safe is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed a significant difference in my students, academically and behaviorally, who utilize the few options we already have. They have demonstrated they are capable of making excellent choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive to their peers and the learning environment when they have an outlet for their active bodies. The items that I have selected will help my students by giving ALL of them alternative and active seating options, which in turn will increase their focus and learning. The wobble stools are adjustable and will allow slight movement for students who are not as active. The wiggle discs allow student to sit on the floor or at a desk while still providing movement as needed. The larger stability balls allow for student to stand at the higher desks or to sit at the floor while still providing movement as needed. During brain breaks, these will be used along with the steppers and ellipticals we currently have to bring exercise rotations (pedal race, squats, etc.) into our class.
I have seen how choice and active seating can positively affect my students focus and behavior and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
