The book "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown gives students a perspective seldom explored in the classroom, as it is told through the voices of the many tribes who were forced from their homes and stripped of their culture.
Promoting cultural competency and celebrating diversity in the classroom is something that is non-negotiable in a school with over 60 languages spoken. Exploring texts like this really hits home for my students, as many of them are new immigrants or first generation Americans. Understanding how gentrification works is still very relevant today, especially in a city like Philadelphia.
The resources you provide will not only allow them to explore a new side of American Literature, but it will also help them get a deeper understanding of US History.
