My 4th & 5th grade Special Education classroom hosts a wonderful mix of students. These students are at various learning levels, and all learn through different modalities. Many of my students do not feel that they are "smart" because they have not had much success in school in the past. Working with this great group of students, I realized very quickly that they are not engaged during a typical lecture format and, because of this, they do not easily retain important concepts. They love questioning and building off of what they are learning, so we utilize any free time to research the topics they are interested in. Most of my students live in low-income homes and do not have the appropriate technology, or even the internet, available to them outside of the classroom, so it is critical that they learn how to use various technologies before they begin middle school. It is hard to cram all of my students around my personal iPad, but they absolutely love the technology!
