The kids we are teaching today will be entering a world and workforce that values complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity and collaborating with each other, among other people-based skills. Collaborative games provide fun, low stakes ways for students to continue to work on these skills with each other beyond the curriculum and long term projects we partake in throughout the year.
Students and I will play games on a monthly to weekly basis as we build community and then reflect on our gameplay for a rich discussion about moments in the game where they saw different benefits of collaborative thinking. My ultimate hope is to combine it with the Habits of Mind as kids learn to develop the language of habits and how each helps them become well-rounded and critical individuals. This set of introductory games will give us many hours of learning, laughing and reflection!
