I teach in a center-based school, we provide services to children that have severe cognitive, communication, and behavioral needs. My classroom has children from kindergarten to second grade. Although they have various different disabilities (Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, PDD-NOS), the most important thing in our classroom is their individual numerous ABILITIES which include beautiful smiles, hugs, and a determination to learn.
We have a wide spectrum of needs in our classroom, as our students vary from completely non-communicative to slightly below typical social interactions. My students communicate with gestures, sign language, augmentative communication devices and verbal language. Our goal is to develop a plan for effective communication and social skills for all of our students so that they can participate in their homes, schools and communities.
