I have the great fortune to teach in the vibrant community of Port Chester, NY. My students are a living embodiment of the assets added to our society through immigration. The district has a student population that is 75% Hispanic many of whom are first or second generation immigrants. They are some of the hardest working students I have ever had the privilege to teach; however, as students in a district with multiple Targeted Assistance schools, many do not have access to the home support system enjoyed by students in some of the more advantaged neighboring Westchester school districts. Without this additional support, many of my students have fallen into a vicious cycle of regression and disinterest. It is my daily challenge to prepare and inspire them.
