Each week, our staff participates in Student Assistance Team meetings to strategize about how to help students who are struggling with work and/or behavior on class. As a teacher consultant, I work with students in multiple classrooms. We have a very diverse school population and we strive to meet the needs of those students with special needs, whether or not they have been identified with a disability. Our school feels strongly that ALL students belong and everyone is included. All students have a general education classroom of same aged peers in addition to their special education classroom or program.
Having a variety of materials will help children be successfully included in their mainstream classroom. The compression vests give students a sense of security and help to calm their sensory system when they are overwhelmed. The reading rulers help students to keep focused and stay on track with what they are reading. Many students have sensitivity to loud noises or crowded environments. The noise cancelling headphones help to make those situations more tolerable so students can participate more successfully. Stretchy bands, weighted turtle and gel seat all help students who have the need to move or need stimulation while learning. These materials will help our diverse learners to be included in all aspects of the school day.
