Our school is a high poverty school with over 75% of students receiving free or reduced lunch. There are around 550 students total in the school. My students are at varied levels of learning English and/or are struggling readers. The Reading Intervention program I teach works with students on reading strategies and helps students become more confident readers. We are the only middle school in our district with an ELD (English Language Development) program. This means all students who are learning English as their 2nd (3rd, 4th...) language are bussed to our school. The English language learners come to the United States with varied levels of exposure to English. Sometimes the students do not have an opportunity to learn English before they come. This could be because of a variety of reasons. Some arrive in my school without even being able to ask or answer simple questions. We have around 25 ELD students.
