Our current classroom library is outdated to say the least. Many of the novels we have are tattered and torn due to them being passed down from teacher to teacher or purchased at thrift stores. It is important to me that a solid culture of reading is built in my classroom, which will help build an even stronger foundation of life-long readers and learners. Students at my school are inundated with many challenges and face adversity every day. I would like to help students face these struggles and help them cope in healthy ways. Exploring new worlds through novels is an incredibly therapeutic solution to the alternatives that may present themselves. The books chosen have been placed on our wish list with great care. Students deserve the opportunity to read literature that interests them and to have this literature be differentiated based on their own uniqueness.
A donation from you would allow students to have a choice in the literature that they will be exploring. Isn’t it wonderful that education is shifting to take into account student interests and genuine engagement? Knowing my students do not have much control over much of their lives, I would be thrilled to provide my students with the opportunity to explore worlds that they have expressed an interest in which will allow them to become more invested in exploring the themes and conflicts that are presented throughout each novel. Investing in these novels will allow my students to participate in lively, authentic, collaboration through literature circles. These students are our future. I think it would be wonderfully splendid to teach them how to properly communicate with each other about difficult and impassioned topics with respect and dignity.
