I am a school counselor at an urban high school with over 200 students on my caseload. My students are very diverse with many of them coming from economically disadvantaged homes. 100% of them receive free or reduced lunch and face various barriers to achieving academic success. They come from homes where food is scarce and where there is not enough money to pay for life's essentials, such as clothing, utilities, and school supplies. Many have experienced trauma and have difficulty getting to school regularly. In fact, nearly 25% of my students are chronically absent from school.
My students are hardworking, dedicated, and most importantly, resilient.
Each and every one of them has the potential to be successful. I want to equal the playing field for my students so they have all the tools necessary to excel academically, as well as emotionally.
