My school is one of the rural schools in our district. We have the second highest poverty rate in our district. A lot of our families grow up on farms, both parents work one or more jobs, have free and reduced lunches, and struggle to make ends meet. These are the kids that do not get to go on vacations, so books are a way for them to escape and open their world. My second graders LOVE books and LOVE to be read to but do not always have books at home. I try to give my students these experiences in my classroom.
