I have set a goal for myself to model good reading for my students as much as time allows. I read at least three picture books a day and try to have them listen to a book on CD or tape at least once a day. We read in the hall during restroom breaks and during times when we must wait for others.
Many of the books I have on tape have been ruined in my tape player and will not play anymore. Classic book characters such as Arthur and Franklin the Turtle have entertained students and displayed great reading. We need books on CD that will not get destroyed in the tape player to replace the outdated technology of my old cassette player.
Spanish books help my students to make connections to their primary language. Books in collections help students make connections with the author's style. Rhyming books provide the rhythm students need to hear for fun and learning to read.
