I am a first year teacher and I will be teaching first grade at a Title I school. Most of my students come from low-income families and having these materials will make a huge impact in their lives. Having a pencil, notebook, eraser, scissors, and crayons will allow them to get through class on a daily basis. They will also be able to take their homework folder home as well as a pencil and any materials they might need to complete their homework. Each student will receive one of each of the supplies I am seeking and they will be taught to respect and take are of them as they will use it all year long. The composition books, as well as the dry-erase markers, will be used during Math lessons. Having these basic supplies will assure all my students have the tools necessary to learn and acquire the education they deserve.
A child's academic success should not be limited by the financial status of their parents. These materials are the tools my students need to be successful in their first grade class. No child should have to worry about having basic school supplies on the first day of school and I will definitely do my part to ensure every single student has the tools he/she deserves.
In addition, some materials such as the card-stock and the decorative wood paper will be used to create poster boards in which students' work will be displayed. It is important students have pride in the work they create and feel accomplished when their work is displayed. This promotes good self-confidence as well as a good classroom environment.
This year will be a wonderful 1st year for my students as well as for myself!
