My students are English Language Learners. . 90% of my students are classified by the United States government as refugees. They come from Eritrea, Burundi, Somalia, Nepal, Rwanda, Uganda, Congo, Syria, The other 10% are immigrants from Mexico, Russia and the Marshall Islands.
What are my students like? Well like all children, they are the hopes and dreams of their parents!
They have the added honor, that is at the same time, a heavy mantle of responsibility, of being a bridge for their parents, to their new home: the United States of America
Most of my students have been in the United States 3 years or less.
When I give them a reading survey at the beginning of the year and ask how many books they own, the majority answer five or fewer. The average being three books.
Many have been studying English for 3 years or less. At home, they usually don't have an opportunity to practice their English skills.
