Creating, improvising, composing, analyzing, and evaluating are the thinking skills we practice during music activities. Teamwork, self-discipline, effort, focus, and mindfulness are real-world skills we practice during music activities. By donating to our music room, our students will be motivated to practice these skills through drumming and movement!
Kids NEED opportunities to move and express themselves at school, especially students who are "at-risk", struggling emotionally or struggling academically. That's exactly what this project will provide. Amazing things happen when you give a child a bucket, a pair of drumsticks and tell them they can be a rock star. Drumming requires a focused mind and creates an ensemble atmosphere. Drumming is considered therapeutic; Research shows it improves mental health.
Our Drum Club ensemble and classroom drum activities will combine elements of bucket drumming, cardio drumming, and African drum circles. Students will have opportunities to improvise, compose, and create movement and rhythms. We will use our drums to practice analyzing and reading music. Our drums will help us train our minds to focus and our ears to listen. Our drummers will have many performance opportunities, both in school and out in the community. Our drumming activities will motivate us to work hard and have FUN doing so!
