The majority of my students are from low-income families with over half being English language learners. Every student in the school receive free breakfast and lunch. In comparison to other districts our schools lack funding, materials, technologies, and resources to give our students equal learning opportunities. Students are currently not performing up to state standards, which put us on academic watch. Now our district/schools are in the process of a system-wide transformation from a traditional classroom to standards-based learning where learning is the constant and time is the variable. Students are changing from dependent to independent learners, from unmotivated to motivated, from students to learners, and so much more. They are getting exciting about learning as they are provided with unique learning opportunities, choice, and confidence. I could only imagine how much more they will benefit from new technologies.
