In our classroom, ARISE means Academic, Rigor, Independence, Social Skills and Emotional Regulation. I teach 7 students with moderate to high special needs in goal oriented high functioning Academic and Functional Life Skills classroom at a primary school in New Orleans. Our classroom environment is filled with everything you will see in a general education classroom and then some.
My students have ranging disabilities including Autism, Cognitive Impairments, and Orthopedic Impairments. Most have services including speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy and adaptive physical education. I have been a special educator for over ten years now and have never had a more fulfilling job. Working with students with special needs has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and families.
