During my time teaching in North Philadelphia, I have recognized that although calculators are a basic tool in most high school math classrooms, they are not readily available to my students. The calculators that my students require are expensive (80+), and very few families can afford the cost.
My students need calculators to perform the mathematics in my class, but they also need experience using the calculators so that they can be successful on statewide and college admissions tests.
Last school year, my students did not have access to calculators and this put them at a disadvantage throughout the year and during state testing.
