Our area is high desert but gets freezing temperatures. It's very rural and we have many wild herbivores that visit the campus. The middle school kids who make up the start up crew for the garden will be learning not only scientific skills which go with gardens, but they will also learn about landscape design, creating structures that are stable and long lasting, and how to use basic tools and building concepts. A prepared garden is one thing, but one that you have built yourself and can see where your efforts have paid off or where you learned from a mistake in order to do a better job, that is entirely different. These children deserve a chance to build a legacy that they will have access to for as long as they attend this school. In some cases that is another 6 years. It is intended to be a learning garden but also to provide food options and hopefully donations to low income households in our area.
