Preschoolers have limitless curiosity. Live animals in the classroom provides opportunities to observe and take care of classroom pets. They also provide endless for language development as the kids talk about what they see and what they think. They support literacy development when the kids write about the animals or become excited about non-fiction books where they can learn more about the animals and fiction books where animals like that have adventures.
Classroom animals used to be standard supplies in early childhood settings. Dwindling funding has taken away schools' ability to provide the animals or their habitats. I have been providing a classroom aquarium and paludarium for years. When schools shut down for COVID, my amphibians didn't make it through the closure. The kids look at the empty paludarium every day wondering when there will be something live in there.
