All of the ELL students in my grade level are clustered into my classroom alongside our English speaking students. I want to build a book library based on some of the "classic" books many children growing up in America have heard as bedtime stories, or experienced within their primary years of school. All students want to "look" like readers with books that are visually stimulating and story lines they can comprehend.
Bridging the language and cultural gap is my focus and what better way to do this than by exposing all my students to a book shelf full of text they can begin to read! Each of my students will be required to start with the pattern book titles such as Goodnight Moon, move into learning about Peter Rabbit, and eventually grow their reading comprehension to early and middle chapter books such as Ramona the Pest, Charlotte's Web and The Tale of Despereaux.
Learning to respond and think about each book will be easier to do given the visually appealing layout of the journals. Sentence stems will be added to my beginning language learners as well as the ability to record their thoughts using a bilingual text approach. This project will boost the confidence of my students as they hear references to characters from childhood classic stories.
