Over 65% of my students come from poverty, many learning English as a second language. My students are on fire to learn, but are often marginalized due to their life situations. These little ones often come to class lacking not only the past experiences and command of the English language to access curriculum and truly enjoy learning, but often without having eaten breakfast or wearing a warm jacket or proper shoes! Despite these monumental barriers, each student I teach is on fire to learn! It is exciting to see their faces light up when they make connections and begin down the road to understanding. They persist, ask intelligent questions, and celebrate even little successes! Despite less than optimal home situations and often lack of basic supplies, each child has the desire and will to learn. They deserve the chances and learning experiences that make learning and success a reality.
