My 24 boys and girls need a place to come together as a whole group for community meetings, lessons, read alouds, and sharing out daily in addition to needing a comfortable area for center work or small group lessons.
When students meet as a whole group, having enough space to sit and enough space to participate in the lesson is imperative to their learning. They need a clean and cozy carpet where every member of the classroom has their own spot. Having their own space on the carpet allows them to utilize manipulatives during math class or their white boards during phonics lessons. If they need to turn and talk to their partner, a spacious carpet gives ample room to switch positions and helps the lesson run more smoothly. Finally, the carpet in the front of the room is a centerpiece for the class. My classroom community is the students' safe haven and I want to provide a space that is warm and welcoming.
