Graphic Novels and their sub-genre reach reluctant readers. I have watched the graphic novel creep into awareness in recent years, which has led to an explosion of stories now published in this format. In order to increase the reading stamina of all students, it is important to allow student choice during classroom reading time. The one request I have over and over again from readers of all ability levels is for more graphic novels. I can't keep enough around, and typically carry stacks and stacks checked out from the library each week due to such demand.
When students meet classic tales like Anne of Green Gables, in a graphic form that they love, magic happens. Having easy access to these stories is life-changing for kids who struggle with reading. Popular titles, like The Babysitters Club, now accessible in graphic novel form, become beloved text to a whole new generation. Suddenly, they have an entrance point to enjoy, discuss and ponder these works. They suddenly have a new world opened to them, which spills into their willingness to accept the reading material they might otherwise avoid.
