Our classroom content requires us to gather as a group at the carpet. Students have a weekly carpet partner that they bounce ideas off of, communicate wonderings, and effectively share their ideas and thinking. Our classroom is a 50+ year old portable with very limited wall space. Our carpet area is a corner area with their hooks on the wall behind the presenter.
During our ELA (reading and writing time) we often write shared stories on large chart paper and read big books. In order to conduct these lessons and write as a class, chart paper is critical. Right now, I'm writing, holding up chart paper, trying to gather all their ideas, and manage student behavior to keep their attention. To effectively model writing and share our writing, an easel is essential.
Big books are a fabulous way to engage readers from a distance, and keeping distance is something that we are all doing our best to do. An easel will better support learners being able to see the text and illustrations and increase participation and a love for literacy.
