Students come into first grade with very varied abilities. In math, I currently have students who can add and subtract comfortably, while others are struggling greatly with skills as simple as number sense. In reading, I have students still mastering letter names and sounds, while a few children are ready to tackle chapter books.
With these resources, I would be able to separate my students into groups, and tailor small group instruction to address the specific needs of each set of students. I'd work with groups at the teacher table, while other students are quietly engaged practicing skills.
