My school is a high-needs, low income school. Many of my students are emotionally needy and require extra care and attention in addition to academic support. They are a diverse bunch and language issues can impact learning. It is important for me to structure academic instruction in order for me to make learning successful for my students. This requires developing units and activities that address their specific academic and social needs, while ensuring that the learning is relevant, creative, and challenging. Parent involvement is minimal and families are often not equipped to provide academic support for students at home. As a result, many of my students struggle to meet grade level expectations. Over the course of the year I create a variety of parent volunteer opportunities in order to involve them in classroom instruction and equip them with strategies to better support their child's academic progress.
