If you have ever spent any time around young children, one thing becomes abundantly clear; they are full of energy and need to move around to stay interested. The same is true when they are in school. Flexible seating gives students a choice in the type of learning space that suits them best, and helps them to collaborate, communicate, engage in critical thinking, and problem-solving, thus increasing their academic learning skills. Students feel empowered having some degree of control over their classroom learning environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where and with whom they work. It also allows them to change their locations thus providing much needed brain breaks. Children need to move! Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand. The more comfortable they feel the more natural learning becomes. This allows them ease in pairing up to work collaboratively, or participate in whole class discussions, without moving mountains of heavy desks. In this new era of rapid change, I want my student’s learning environment to reflect the real world, so that it is conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This simply is more difficult to accomplish when students are sitting in rows of desks all day!
Last school year I created a beach themed area. I placed towels and mats on the floor throughout the room. This immediately changed the atmosphere in my room causing students to grow more passionate about reading. For the upcoming school year, I would LOVE to provide my students with an even more enhanced classroom learning environment. It will allow students to feel more relaxed and comfortable in the classroom. Creating a student centered classroom is imperative to enhance students constructive learning and creates successful lifelong learners.
