I work in a school where over 90% of the population are minority and live below the poverty level. My students face many challenges. Gang violence, absentee parents, and hunger are just some of the harsh realities my students face on a daily basis. I like to think that my classroom is a sanctuary for them, that all of these things can be set aside; that they can be in a place that is safe and where they are loved and cared for. My school has made great strides in getting behavior under control and is now making great strides in student growth and learning. Our resources are limited, and it would be nice to be able to level the playing field a little.
