When I analyzed which cadets were spending the most time with the primary source binders, I noticed that most had low reading skills who historically never read for pleasure. Many of our cadets arrived missing valuable background knowledge; the primary source materials filled those gaps. Each time cadets were at the reading station, I was guaranteed to hear questions such as, \"Ma'am, did you know computers used to look like this?\" or \"Ma'am, have you seen this ad for penicillin that was in Life magazine?\"\r\n\r\nHistorically, cadets who score a Level 2 on the TABE reading test struggle to pass the GED. However, after using these resources, the overall Social Studies GED pass rate for all cadets was 80%. Even among those who scored a Level 2 in reading, 69% passed. When I analyzed which cadets were spending the most time with the books, I noticed that most had low reading skills who historically never read for pleasure. Many of our cadets arrived missing valuable background knowledge; these books filled those gaps. FLCYA is a quasi-military school for struggling 16-18 year old girls and boys. The cadets live on the military base for 5 1/2 months and get training to pass the GED or make up high school credits, learn coping skills, explore effective discipline, and begin to understand the importance of giving back to others through community service. To be able to add a creative outlet like the Art Club encourages these teenagers to think critically, improve problem-solving skills, and it promotes self-expression. \r\n\r\nOur first painting was of a moonrise over a lake in acrylics. The results were phenomenal! Because male and female cadets are separated, we began with the females and they learned how to mix colors and the aspect that larger objects are those appearing closer to the viewer. All of this was done within our 50 minute time constraint. Most cadets mailed their masterpieces home as gifts to parents and friends. They continuously ask when the next Art Club class will be so they can show off more of their talents. \r\n \r\nWithout your support of the Art Club project through Donors Choose, none of this would have been possible.
